About “Mola”
“Mola” is one of the defining songs from AWU’s debut album, Sounds of Heritage. Released as the album’s first single on September 3, 2021, the song introduced listeners to the musical direction AWU described as Makossa Fusion, later associated with his broader Kossa-Fusion identity. The single was produced by PhilBill and released through Deekay House / Numero Eight.
The song was created as a contemporary interpretation of AWU’s connection to Makossa, combining elements of the genre with other African sounds to create a sound that reflects both his heritage and his individual artistic identity.
The Meaning Behind “Mola”
“Mola” carries a message of perseverance, self-belief and moving forward despite opposition. The song addresses the experience of being underestimated, discouraged or held back by people who may not want to see someone succeed.
AWU responds to this negativity with resilience. Rather than allowing criticism or difficult circumstances to determine his future, he emphasizes forgiveness, patience and the belief that brighter days will eventually come.
The repeated phrase “Mola na when you go wise” gives the song its memorable central expression, while the lyrics move between personal ambition, social relationships and the desire to live a meaningful life.
The song also reflects AWU’s preference for communicating in accessible Cameroonian Pidgin English, allowing the message to remain direct and closely connected to his cultural environment.
The Makossa-Fusion Sound
“Mola” was deliberately positioned as an introduction to AWU’s new musical direction. At the time of its release, Deekay House described Makossa Fusion as a combination of Makossa and other sounds designed to create something contemporary, experimental and celebratory while preserving AWU’s individuality.
AWU’s connection with Makossa goes back to his appreciation of the genre and artists such as Sam Fan Thomas, Ben Decca and Jacky Kingue. With “Mola,” those influences were not presented as a simple recreation of classic Makossa. Instead, AWU sought to reinterpret the genre for a contemporary audience.
This approach became an important foundation for Sounds of Heritage, an album built around reconnecting with Cameroonian musical heritage while giving it a modern expression.

The Official Music Video
The official music video for “Mola” was released on July 22, 2022 through AWU’s official artist channel. The video was directed by Tcheck.
The visual extends the song’s message of individuality and perseverance, presenting AWU in a contemporary African setting that complements the cultural character of the record.
The official video also helped give the song a stronger visual identity after its original audio and lyric-video release, bringing the Sounds of Heritage era to a wider audience.
“Mola” and Sounds of Heritage
“Mola” became the first musical introduction to AWU’s debut album, Sounds of Heritage. Africori reported that the album had been approximately two years in development before its release and identified “Mola” as the single used to begin the album’s pre-release campaign.
The album was eventually released on November 12, 2021, containing 15 tracks and establishing heritage, Makossa and contemporary African fusion as central elements of AWU’s musical identity.
Within that larger project, “Mola” serves as an important statement of intent: a song about standing firm, embracing one’s identity and continuing toward success despite the obstacles along the way.
